For many of us, summer is about relaxing, laying by the pool and working on a tan. However, I and many of my students also look to take advantage of the free time and get into the studio to continue to train and grow!
Obviously it is important to continue to condition and maintain all of the hard work put in from the previous year but there are other reasons why summer dance is beneficial. Part of why I enjoy teaching over the summer is that I can see students progress at the speed of light. They don’t have the pressure and fatigue from their school work and other commitments. They can focus solely on being there in the moment and enjoying those moments without having to rush home to finish that paper that’s “due tomorrow!”. They can finally breathe and breathe deep. It shows in their movement. They are more open to going places in choreography and know that it’s a safe time to experiment. There is no “final exam” for their dancing during the summer. Just a progression of growth. As their teacher this is how I wish it could be all the time.
It is also wonderful to see students step into a style that they aren’t ready to commit to for a whole year. It’s an opportunity to try something new without the pressure of a recital. They can jump into a new class with both feet. If they find it’s not for them, it was just a few weeks lost but if they love it, a new passion seed has been planted!
Lastly, I love being a part of this special time because I often see new social connections made and existing ones strengthened. Sometimes we will have one student sign up for a class or an intensive but his/her two best friends passed on the opportunity. Often we see this student connect to new friends and create amazing memories that they refer back to year after year. So yes, I will relax, I will lay by a pool and attempt a tan however I realize this time is precious and I wouldn’t miss it for the world!
