“Sometimes when I hear a piece of music I know right away it will become a piece of choreography. When we heard this song we instantly fell in love with its eerie opening and alluring melody. The piece started off as just choreography in class. We wanted to do something edgy and different. Once we taught the combination to my class we knew we needed to save it for something special. We made the decision to use it for the Senior Repertory Company at Plymouth Meeting. We knew the movement would mold into a Contemporary Jazz piece.
We were inspired to add the flashlights to this piece from another piece of choreography we had created in the past, which had a similar theme and feel. As we began to put the lighting and the choreography together the lighting really took over. The lines and illusions the flashlights made were so interesting to me. It was at that first rehearsal that we knew we wanted the flashlights to be an extension of the dancer’s arms extending the lines even that much further.
We began to mesh the underground theme of the piece with different movement patterns and groupings. We played with circular patterns and simplistic movements always keeping the lighting as the focus. We worked more movement patterns into different sections of the music always keeping the circular patterns present. This piece pushed me to create a dance that was less about the movement and more about the way the lighting moved through space.
Watching these amazing dancers bring it to life on stage was confirmation for me that this piece really pushed the idea of light and movement to a new level. The dancers rose to the challenge artistically and embodied the eerie yet beautiful qualities of the piece.”
